That the Peter in the story was willing to give Walter his heart, and therefore sacrifice his life is also a pretty easy metaphor for the fact that the real Peter gave up a life of wandering to stay with his father in Boston. Much to Carly's horror, Shelby shows up at the apartment, saying she's ready to fight. Carly ends up running away from her knowing that she is going to get beat up. Shelby assures her that she's not angry nor offended by Carly's challenge, and simply wants to hold an exhibition match with her for publicity and charity for both of them. Although Carly is deeply worried about it, she agrees when Shelby and Sam assure her that she won't get hurt.

As Fry, Bender and the Professor travel further into the future, however, it becomes clear that there is no clear way for them to return, pulling Fry further away from the object of his affection and providing the episode with an underlying narrative tension that really evokes the feeling of being yanked further and further away from a loved one.

The Late Philip J. Fry works so well because it uses time travel as a device to tell a more meaningful and intimate story while also exhibiting a raft of surreally possible futures ranging from giraffes enslaving humans to a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
